Let’s Pray
Intro: Now remember Jesus just flipped the tables yesterday, so those that ran the temple, and all who profited from turning it into a marketplace were upset at Jesus.
So lets read in Luke chapter 20 what goes on today…
Intro:
“Holy Week #3 Day of Controversy and Parables"
“Quibi Study #4 Day of Controversy and Parables"
Tuesday
Luke 20:1 ESV
One day, as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up
Luke 20:2 ESV
and said to him, “Tell us by what authority you do these things, or who it is that gave you this authority.”
Life Application Bible Commentary, Luke Religious Leaders Challenge Jesus’ Authority / 20:1–8 / 189

They really did not care under whose authority Jesus was acting, whether divine or human. They only wanted to force him to say something incriminating.

They really didn't care, under whose authority Jesus was acting, whether divine or human.
They only wanted to force him to say something incriminating.
They wanted Jesus to seem like a Rebel, like if He was preaching on His own, making up stuff with no authority or backing.
And so they wanted Him to slip up on His response.
Luke 20:3 ESV
He answered them, “I also will ask you a question. Now tell me,
Luke 20:4 ESV
was the baptism of John from heaven or from man?”
Luke 20:5 ESV
And they discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why did you not believe him?’
Luke 20:6 ESV
But if we say, ‘From man,’ all the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced that John was a prophet.”
See John pointed to Jesus as the Messiah, so if he was sent by God and spoke under the authority of God, then His claims of Jesus were also authorized by God.
Luke 20:7 ESV
So they answered that they did not know where it came from.
Luke 20:8 ESV
And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
Jesus decided to stay silent instead of play into their games.
:
Have you ever talked about Jesus or faith with anyone who isn’t a Christian???
You will see right away if they are interested to really talk about these subjects or if they just want to argue.
So from there Jesus begins to tell a parable, which is a story, a vision of life.
Luke 20:9 ESV
And he began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard and let it out to tenants and went into another country for a long while.
Luke 20:10 ESV
When the time came, he sent a servant to the tenants, so that they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed.
Talk about messed up...
He allows the tenants to farm the land, but their payment of rent was to give the owner a portion of the crop.
But instead beat the man the owner sent instead.
Luke 20:1
Luke 20:11 ESV
And he sent another servant. But they also beat and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed.
Luke 20:12 ESV
And he sent yet a third. This one also they wounded and cast out.
Three different servants were sent and all of them were wounded.
Luke 20:13 ESV
Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.’
If you haven’t noticed by now God is the owner, the religious leaders are the tenants and now He’s sending his son, which represents Jesus.
Luke 20:14 ESV
But when the tenants saw him, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir. Let us kill him, so that the inheritance may be ours.’
This is Tuesday and in this parable Jesus is telling all that they are about to kill Him, without fully saying it.
Luke 20:15 ESV
And they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?
Luke 20:16 ESV
He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others.” When they heard this, they said, “Surely not!”
Since the religious leaders have rejected Him, God would destroy them and give the son Jesus Christ to others who would receive Him.
They said: surely not...
Luke 20:17 ESV
But he looked directly at them and said, “What then is this that is written: “ ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone’?
Luke 20:18 ESV
Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.”
Those who do receive Jesus and come to Him, will be broken, but those who refuse will be crushed.
Closing: Anyone have any thoughts tonight???
